The Association of Language Companies’ 21st annual conference, held September 20-22 in Portland, Oregon, once again brought together leaders in the language service industry, and featured presentations, panel discussions, training seminars and networking opportunities.
Miller, Miller & Canby’s Scott Mirsky joined Steven Kahaner, Executive Director of Juriscribe, to present on the topic of “Legal Update on Independent Contractor Agreements, Non-Compete Agreements, and Client Agreements.” The presentation covered hot-button issues, including “Top 10” challenges with independent contractor agreements, legal issues related to non-competes — covering unique requirements in jurisdictions across the country — and tips on preparing client agreements.
The Association of Language Companies was established in 2002 in Portland, Oregon and promotes the professional stature and economic position of the language service industry through advocacy and professional development of language company owners and senior management.
According to the ALC website, the language service industry “helps others to communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers.” The need for language services has grown at a rapid pace in recent years due to globalization of business, and a “more interconnected world population.”
“More than ever, organizations are navigating unchartered territory with respect to the independent contractor landscape,” said Mirsky. “From the influx of remote work to the increased complexities of managing teams across the globe, it is more critical than ever for businesses to understand the legal and bottom-line ramifications of independent contractor agreements,” he added.
